Christmas in July: The Secret to Stress-Free Holiday Shopping

Christmas in July really is a thing, and I'm here for it!

To me, it's the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. While most people don't start thinking about Christmas until November, the smartest shoppers know that July is when the magic begins.

You may be wondering, "How can I possibly start Christmas shopping now?"

It all starts with one simple habit: listening.

The Fourth of July is one of the few holidays where families and friends spend extended time together. Conversations flow naturally, and if you're paying attention, people will tell you exactly what they want for Christmas without even realizing it.

Casually ask, "Have you thought about Christmas yet?"

Yes, some people may laugh or look at you like you've lost your mind. But others will start talking.

"I've been wanting one of those Stanley cups."

"I really need a new grill."

"I've always wanted an air fryer."

"My favorite wine is..."

Those little comments are pure gold.

Instead of scrambling in December trying to remember what everyone likes, you'll already have the perfect gift ideas.

Here's my favorite tip:

Keep a small notebook in your purse or wherever you normally keep your essentials. If you're hosting the gathering, leave it nearby so you can quickly jot things down. If you're away from home, simply use the Notes app on your phone.

Don't just listen for gift ideas. Pay attention to the little details:

  • Favorite wine or beverage

  • Favorite snack

  • Favorite color

  • Hobbies and interests

  • New home projects

  • Books they mention

  • Sports teams they love

  • Restaurants they enjoy

  • Something they wish they had

These small details help you give gifts that make people feel seen, appreciated, and loved.

Here's a challenge for you: At your next family gathering, don't just enjoy the food and conversation. Become a thoughtful gift detective. Listen carefully, take notes, and start building your Christmas gift list months before everyone else.

Trust me—when December arrives, you'll thank yourself.

Happy Christmas in July!
